How We Transformed Banking Operations For India’s Leading Bank Service Provider

A Forerunner in Commercial Banking

Following its beginnings in West Bengal, Bandhan Bank has made a name for itself in providing superior and reliable commercial banking services. With a customer base of over 3 crore customers, and employee headcounts of over 75 thousand, Bandhan continues to grow and scale rapidly.
As this expansion continues, Bandhan approached us seeking a solution to their disjointed internal operations interface. To this end, Zethic developed Sangam, a customized banking operations management system.

The Context

Bandhan Bank’s employees used a direct FLEXCUBE core banking solution to fetch banking data. This created two major pain points for their operations.
First, this legacy system was slow, with a UI that lacked usability and consistency. Second, the unrestricted CBS access raised the risks of sensitive data exposure.
Bandhan approached us to develop a front-end platform for their banking operations that would offer a user-friendly graphical interface, while reinforcing security measures.

The Requirements

We envisioned Sangam to be a one-stop solution for Bandhan Bank’s operational needs. Careful discussion helped us narrow down the functionalities that our platform needed to deliver on:

Augment Security

Sangam needed to find workarounds to the unrestricted customer data access of traditional core banking systems. Data security had to be enhanced through access control

Handle Core Banking Operations

The system needed to interact with the operational back-end for performing relevant functions – profile viewing, maintenance, updates, transaction handling, loans and servicing, among others.

Deliver on Speed

Legacy systems were bogging down banking processes with inefficient query systems, slow data fetching, and time-consuming account operations. The solution had to query the CBS and return relevant data, lightning fast.

Simplify UI

The most important requirement from the project was designing an easy-to-use, easy-to-understand interface – to replace the cluttered approach of core banking systems.

The Challenges

After collating a list of requirements, and a list of tech tools we could tackle it with, our teams began working on Sangam.

User Experience Gaps

The first challenge we encountered was designing a modern, intuitive interface for a diverse user group (tellers, RMs, managers). Existing CBS screens were cluttered and inconsistent – our teams had to hone in on key design principles to make it happen effectively.

Performance & Scale

The platform had to handle thousands of concurrent users, scale across different bank branches, while ensuring lightning-fast responses for most actions.

Security Assurance

Our team explored and carefully selected security measures made to protect sensitive banking information. Rigorous testing had to be performed to make sure we left no gaps.

The Development Journey

We adopted a modular SDLC model, breaking down Sangam into independent, testable components.

Agile sprints ensured that key features were delivered incrementally, with feedback cycles involving Bandhan’s IT and operations teams.
